Pebble Mine

I agree with the wisdom of our former Senator Ted Stevens:  “I am not opposed to mining, but [Pebble] is the wrong mine in the wrong place.”  Bristol Bay hosts one of the most productive fisheries in the world.  It is a natural renewable treasure and a source of thousands of jobs.  Bristol Bay’s prolific wild salmon runs have supported a culture and a people for thousands of years.  Bristol Bay is too important a resource to place at risk by locating one of the world’s largest open pit mines at its headwaters.

Funding for Fisheries Management and Science

Alaska is a world leader in sustainable wild fisheries.  As a Board Member of Prince William Sound Science Center, I know how important sound fishery data and science-based management practices are to maintaining sustainable and productive fisheries.  Continued success depends on continued industry and government financial support, which I will vigorously pursue.

Fighting Illegal Fishing

In 2015 Congress finally passed the Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing Enforcement Act.  Now comes the challenge of adequately funding enforcement measures for that law.  As Alaska’s Senator I will be dedicated to that task.

Labeling GMO Fish

Consumers have a right to know what they are buying and Alaska’s fishermen have a right to distinguish their product from a laboratory-designed Frankenfish.  I support prominent disclosure requirements for genetically modified seafood.

Alaska Seafood Marketing

Marketing Alaska’s wild salmon effectively is key to obtaining premium prices for a premium product.  As Alaska’s Senator, I will support expanded funding of public-private partnerships to help make the qualities of Alaska seafood known both domestically and worldwide.
